  Investigation of the formation and functions of lexical gaps in the English and Russian languages in the sphere of education is very topical today. First of all, the notion of the term “lexical gap” is very complex and questionable. There are a lot of different classifications and means of formation of lexical gaps which are worth discussing. Second, modern scientists pay a lot of attention towards linguistic phenomena which reflect modern correlation of languages, the problems of cultural penetration and translatability of text. Third, the system of education is at present in the state of constant changing. Russian system of education is more oriented nowadays to the English education and its peculiarities. In connection with the above we can affirm the topicality of our investigation.
  Conclusion
  
  In order to achieve the aim of the present work we have solved several tasks.
  First, we have examined the notion of lexical gap and made a conclusion that lexical gap is the absence of a word in a particular place in a lexical field of a language which can be revealed with the help of cross-linguistic comparisons. We have observed different types of lexical gaps and realized the complicity and ambiguity of the notion. Lexical gaps appear in the language due to different reasons: social and cultural differences, conditions of social and political life, conditions of cultural life and the way of life of the people, the uniqueness of its philosophy and psychology, and peoples’ traditions.
