  ANNOTATION
  
  World Health Organization (WHO) has a long tradition of epidemiological survey methodology in oral health. The bank of surveys emerged from the gathering of information from surveys on the growing burden of dental caries among children and grown ups, particularly notable in industrialized countries. Most of the surveys carried out in different countries were initially motivated by the need for planning of oral health services or organization of public health intervention programs. Standard methodology for the collection of epidemiological data on oral health has been designed by WHO and used by countries worldwide for the surveillance of oral disease and health. Global, regional and national oral health databanks have highlighted the changing patterns of oral disease which primarily reflect changing risk profiles and the implementation of oral health programs oriented towards disease prevention and health promotion.
  This review provides an updated summary and discussion of the modern epidemiological survey methods in dentistry. These methods help to estimate the spread of dental diseases and to define the demand for their prevention and treatment.

  Epidemiological survey methods in dentistry
  
  Epidemiology (from Greek ‘epi’ – above, ‘demos’ – people, ‘logos’ – study) studies the health of people, the spread and peculiarities of diseases, influencing of environment and way of life on these diseases. It is “the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations and the application of this study to control health problems” [11, p. 2].
  The main tasks of epidemiology are the following:
  - to estimate the spread and intensity of the main dental diseases;
  - to reveal the demand for their prevention and treatment;
  - to define the number of full mouth debridement and effectiveness of prevention;
  - to compare the spread of disease in different regions;
  - to disclose means necessary for prevention measures.
  Epidemiological survey consists of three main stages:
  1. Preparatory stage: defining of the main age and index groups; methods correction; selection of tools.
