Polarizing Without Legitimizing: The Effect of Lead Candidates" Campaigns on Perceptions of the EU Democracy
The article Polarizing Without Legitimizing: The Effect of Lead Candidates" Campaigns on Perceptions of the EU Democracy by S.Popa, R.Rohrschneider and H.Schmitt (2016) studies the problem of the way citizens evaluate the influence of lead candidates on the EU’s democratic performance. The main goal of the introduction of lead candidates was to integrate the European Union values into a society. In order to find out whether this goal was reached, the article examines how the presence of leading candidates affected people’s perceptions of the EU democracy.
To examine citizens’ perceptions concerning the influence of lead candidates in the 2014 election on the democratic profile of the European Union, the article considers three models: the “legitimization”, the “polarization”, and the “partisan” models.
    ………………..
So, having studied the three models that provide three predictions concerning the way lead candidates may influence voters: whether they may improve the EU’s democratic image, or contribute to polarization over integration, or reinforce the partisan divides at the EU level, – contrary to what innovators, who introduced lead candidates in the 2014 election, had expected, the article proved that the presence of lead candidates actually polarized the European public: those who supported the EU believed the European Union would become more democratic owing to the leading candidates, however, those who were skeptical about the EU opposed it all the more when they identified candidates in question as EU encouragers.
    ……..
