  CHAPTER 1. LEXICAL UNITS REFLECTING CULTURE AND HISTORICAL PAST IN THEIR MEANING AND THEIR STUDY IN MODERN LINGUISTICS
  
  Language is a means of reflecting national-cultural identity and historical past of people speaking it. The nation’s history influences greatly on the language not only in political or social aspect but also in the pure linguistic aspect. It means that language is changing under the influence of nations and language contacts. The changes are seen mostly in its vocabulary. The more contacts the nation has in its history, the more borrowed words their language has. When the language is lingua franca (as in case with English in the present day situation), it is an interlanguage for people of different nationalities. As a result this interlanguage gets more rich language features and changes its vocabulary [5, p.19].
  Many linguists say about the close link of language and its history. According to D. Crystal, “language is the repository of the history of a people. It is their identity… It is their legacy to the rest of humanity” [29, p.9].
  The present research is devoted to the linguistic examination of British English reflecting national-cultural identity and historical past in its vocabulary. Consequently, it is important to reveal the types of lexical units expressing history in their etymology and culture in their word meaning.
  National-cultural identity and historical past is reflected in British English by means of many different lexical units. Nevertheless, it is very difficult and even impossible to make a kind of typology of such lexical units. As A. Wierzbicka says, “there is no finite set of such words in a language, and there is no ‘objective discovery procedure” for identifying them” [59, p.16].
