    Abstract
Impostor syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which a person who has achieved success has a sense of his or her own incompetence. A person with this syndrome is unable to relate their merit to the effort and knowledge they have put in. It is important to remember that impostor syndrome is not a permanent condition. It is usually situational: it appears only in certain situations and areas of personal activity and depends on the person"s perception of the situation and the environment. It is not a mental illness, but the syndrome can have a negative impact on personal development. Impostor Syndrome and How to Fight it
The term was coined by psychotherapists Pauline Clance and Susan Imes in the late 1970s in their paper "The Imposter Phenomenon among Successful Women", in which they addressed the problem that many women who achieve professional success consider themselves "frauds".
After the publication of this work, many scientists in the field of psychological sciences began their research on this phenomenon.
Basic Scientific Approaches to the Formation of Impostor Syndrome
We can identify four basic situations in which people sense their own incompetence and devalue their achievements:
?When a person gets a position that does not really correspond to his or her real qualifications. A person realises that he or she "falls short" and has got the position only due to chance and luck rather than his or her own merits, and becomes afraid that others will find out about it and "expose" his or her unprofessionalism.
?When a person is given a position which corresponds to his real qualifications, he is initially plagued by a feeling of incompetence which arose as a natural response to leaving his comfort zone. However this feeling disappears when the adaptation period is over and the person "settles in" to the job.
