  Stephen John Fry is a famous British actor, screenwriter and the author of many wide-known fiction books. In Great Britain he is respected as a person who could make an image of representative of English spirit and perfect English language.
  Sometimes people know Stephen Fry more as a comedy actor. But in the present study we are interested in his personality and style as a writer of fiction books. As a writer he is mostly famous for such his books as “The Liar” (1991), “The Hippopotamus” (1994), “Making History: A Novel” (1996), “The Star’s Tennis Balls” (2001).
  His novel “The Star’s Tennis Balls” is written in a genre of psychological thriller which is very popular in the modern times, for instance, “Bird Box” by Josh Malerman, “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins, “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn and many others. This novel is considered to be a modern adaptation of “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas. In the USA this book is published under another title “Revenge”...
  Every humanitarian subject examines fiction from its own perspective. In the modern linguistics fiction is investigated as a rule in the aspect for text linguistics and linguostylistics. Consequently, image of characters is researched in the present work mostly from the position of stylistics and not of literature studies. On the other hand, the present research needs interdisciplinary approach to the examination of image of characters and means of their creation.
  The full explanation of the term “character” cannot be given with the help of etymological analysis either. An English word “character” goes back to the Greek word “charakter” with the direct meaning ‘stamping tool’ and figurative one ‘the stamp of personality unique to a human’. As for the synonymic term “personage” taken in English from French and Italian, it goes back to the Latin word “persona” with the direct meaning of ‘the mask though which the sound of the voice of an actor is heard’ [Eder 2010: 7]...
  The objective of this study was to reveal stylistic features used by the writer for making images of the main characters in his novel “The Star’s Tennis Balls”. This objective was achieved according to the investigation of the following tasks:
  In this work the idea of character in fiction is studied. The conclusion is made that a character in fiction is a figurative term signifying a fictive person or fictional analogue to a human. The main division of characters in fiction is into main and minor characters. In the Fry’s novel “The Stars’ Tennis Balls” we have analyzed the system of main characters and some minor characters performing their main characteristics.
  In the given study the ways of displaying the images in fiction are examined including stylistic means. We have made a conclusion that the writers display their characters in their biography, physical appearance, behaviors, speech characterization with the help of different lexical units (evaluative, emotive units, personal pronouns, proper names, lexemes of different connotations) and stylistic devices such as metaphors, epithets, hyperboles and many others...
