  Introduction
  
  The present study is devoted to the comparative analysis of modal verbs in the English and German languages. In many languages of the world modal verbs are as a rule the representatives of different meanings of modality. That it why modal verbs should be investigated in the present research in a close link with the modal semantics of verbs, as they express the category of modality in a language. In general modality is one of the most complicated and contradictory language phenomena. In the modern linguistic the problem of modal verbs in the system of modal meanings is thoroughly investigated. Nevertheless, thee question of modal verbs and their semantic in different language in comparative aspect is solved not to the end.
  Without any doubt, modal verbs occupy a special place in the verbal system of different languages. But the strict position of modal verbs in the verbal system is observed not in all languages of the world. English and German are languages which have the strictly defined system of modal verbs in their structure. More over, the similarity of these languages leads to the fact that a lot of modal verbs of the English and German languages have much in common. That is why it is interesting to make a comparative analysis of modal verbs in English and German.
  The topicality of the present study can be explained by the insufficient study of the system of modal verbs in the English and German language in comparative aspect, as well as by the necessity to disclose common and different features of modal verbs in these two languages.
  The main goal of the research is to make a comparative analysis of modal verbs in the English and German languages.

  Chapter 1. Modal Verbs and Their Peculiarities in English and German
  1.1. The notion of modal verb in Grammar
  
  In the first chapter of the present research we will investigate a group of verbs existing in the English and German languages which is today of great interest for grammarians and linguists. The analyzed group of verbs is called in English “modal verbs” and in German “Modalverben”. In the English linguistics the problem of modal verbs is investigated, for example, by such scientists as J. Melvin [Melvin 2017], P. Dendale [Dendale 2001], J. Boyd [Boyd, Thorne 1968]. In German linguistics this theme is researched by C. Milan [Milan 2013], C. Baumann [Baumann 2017] and others.
  Modal verbs in a language are the component of the system of verbs consisting of:
  1) auxiliaries;
  2) modals;
  3) main verbs [Nugues 2006, p. 116].
  In this classification of verbs auxiliaries are helper verbs such as “have” or “be”. Their function is to enable us to build some of the main verb tenses. For example:
  I believe we should have been told, and I appreciate your thinking (A. Hailey “The Moneychangers”).
  Main verbs express the main action in the sentences (that are notional verbs indeed):
  The use of first names came easily to Heyward (A. Hailey “The Moneychangers”).
  And modal verbs in this classification are verbs immediately followed by another verb in the infinitive (in both English and German). Their main feature is that they usually indicate a modality (a possibility, for example):
  "Up to twenty," Eastin said. "As long as I can work with my socks off." (A. Hailey “The Moneychangers”).
