  INTRODUCTION
  
  The problem of parenthetical constructions attracts attention of Russian and foreign researchers throughout the history of linguistics. Scientists are interested in the study of this phenomenon in functional, semantic and grammatical aspects. But today the question of parenthesis in English and Russian linguistics cannot be called settled. There are many urgent problems which are researched differently by foreign and Russian linguists. This fact leads to the great contradictions in the understanding of parenthetical constructions. Consequently, the topicality of the present research consists in the ambiguousness of the notion of parenthetical constructions and in the need for comparative research of parenthesis in the Russian and English languages.
  The object of the research is the notion of parenthetical construction.
  The subjects of the present research are functions of parenthetical constructions in comparative aspect.
  The aim of the present paper is to analyze functional characteristics of parenthetical constructions used in the English and Russian languages.
  The defined tasks of the research are the following:
  1. To study the notion of parenthetical construction.
  2. To cite classifications of parenthetical constructions.
  3. To examine functions of parenthetical constructions in a text.
  4. To analyze functions of parenthetical constructions in English and Russian mass media texts.

  CHAPTER 1. PECULIAR FEATURES OF PARENTHETICAL CONSTRUCTIONS IN ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN
  1.1. Notion of parenthetical construction
  
  Notion of parenthetical construction should be investigated on the basis of its cultural representation. It is connected with the fact that linguistics of different countries uses various definitions of parenthesis.
  Thus, in English and other European languages parenthetical constructions can include structures of different language levels, such as words, word-combinations, predicates, sentences. Every parenthetical unit is considered to be included into a sentence but not to be connected with the other sentence parts.
  So, in European linguistics parenthesis is understood as a metatextual element which has a definite communicative function in the text and actualizes some hidden meanings in the narrative [8, p.120].
  Uncertainty of the notion “parenthesis” in the European linguistics leads to the appearance of a row of synonymic terms. For instance, foreign researchers widely use the following terms: parenthetical element [25], parenthetical text or parenthetical comment [17], parenthetical word [27], parenthetical expression [18] and other.
  As for the Russian linguistics, here the term “parenthesis” is used mostly in order to define a stylistic means of expressiveness. But in grammatical aspect the analyzed phenomenon is researched in two terms: “вводная конструкция” and “вставочная конструкция”. In the works of Russian linguists these two terms are differentiated on the basis of their structural, semantic and functional differences. It is assumed that parenthetical constructions in Russian (“вводные конструкции”) have modal meanings and emotional assessment. Inserted constructions (“вставочные конструкции”) are characterized in their turn by additional or specified information in the sentence.
