  Introduction
  
  Phraseology is pervasive in all language fields and yet despite this fact – or perhaps precisely because of it – it has only relatively recently become established as a discipline in its own right. The phraseology literature represents it as a subfield of lexicology dealing with the study of word combinations rather than single words. These multi-word units are classified into a range of subtypes in accordance with their degree of semantic non-compositionality, syntactic fixedness, lexical restrictions and institutionalization.
  The topicality of the theme is that, phraseology has become a major area of interest in corpus linguistics. A large amount of research has focused on multi-word units as units of meaning in language. Stylistics has not taken much notice of the notion that literary meaning is frequently expressed by phrases and not single words. Naciscione (2001) is one of the few linguists who has worked on a phraseological analysis of literary works. In her analysis of works by Chauceran D.H. Lawrence, she looks for recurrent phraseological units with partly or completely figurative meaning.
  Phraseology describes the context in which a word is used. This often includes typical usages, such as idioms, phrasal verbs, and multi-word units. Phraseological units are stable word-groups with partially or fully transferred meanings .
  Undoubtedly, the correct usage of the English idioms is a finesse, which makes the language of the speaker more vivid and exciting."
  Semantic classification:
  There are 2 criteria:
  • The degree of semantic isolation
  • The degree of disinformation
  1. Opaque in meaning
  the meaning of the individual words can’t be summed together to produce the meaning of the whole.
  • Ex.: to kick the bucket = to die
  It contains no clue to the idiomatic meaning of this expression
  The degree of semantic isolation is the highest. => phraseological fusions
  2. Semi-opaque
  one component preserves its direct meaning
  • Ex.: to pass the buck = to pass responsibility – свалитьответственность
  => phraseological unities
