  English language is the official language in the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and many other countries. English is considered to be the official language of many international organizations such as, for instance, UNO. Nowadays more than 370 billion people speak English. Modern English is used in many spheres of human activity.
  At present linguists distinguish five main variants of the English language: British, American, Canadian, Australian variants and English of New Zealand. But still a lot of researches are devoted to the differences of the British and American variants because they are considered to be the most influential variants of the English language. That is why the study of lexical differences in British and American differences is actual nowadays.

  1. Evolution of British and American variants of the English language
  1.1. History of the English language
  
  The English language had been changing greatly during its historical evolution. The scientists distinguish three main periods of the English language history: Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. In the very beginning of its evolution, the English language has been developing from the four main territorial dialects: Northumbria, Mercian, Wessex and Kentish dialects. The meaning of the Wessex dialect dominated under the influence of Scandinavian and Latin. Middle English was influenced greatly by French. In the Modern English language we can observe the meaning of language contacts and terminological borrowings.
  Braj B. Kachru examines the following periods of the English language evolution: the Inner Circle, the Outer Circle and Expanding Circle [Kachru, Kachru, Nelson 2006, p. 291].
