  Introduction
  
  Fast development of informational technologies and the tendency towards globalization of all spheres of social life in the 21st century influenced the development of mass media. As a result of the Internet appearance mass media became the most important discourse in the life of modern people. Mass media texts are directed not only to inform recipients about the events in political, economic and social life, but also to form the definite opinion of people. It can be achieved by means of idiomatic expressions which are socially and culturally marked. It must be emphasized that idiomatic expressions are in the centre of different scholars’ attention nowadays. Researches of Russian and foreign linguists help to understand that idioms have a specific status in the languages. That is why it is important to investigate the functioning of idiomatic expressions in mass media discourse. Consequently, the topicality of the present research is undeniable.
  Conclusion
  
  According to the aim of the present research, we have solved several tasks: we have studied the notion of the term “idiomatic expression” in the English and Russian languages, classifications of English and Russian idiomatic expressions, examined idiomatic expressions in English and Russian mass media, investigated functioning of idiomatic expressions in modern English and Russian mass media sources, and made a comparative analysis of peculiarities of idiomatic expressions in the English and Russian languages.
  We have found out that idiomatic expressions have different terminological apparatus in the Russian and English languages: English scholars speak about idioms, while Russian scientists examine phraseological units.
