  Richard Bach is an American author whose writings are well known and esteemed in the United States of America and other countries of the world. He occupies one of the first places in the row of writers who are able to conceptualize the reality and to depict the usual world through various extraordinary stylistic devices. The writings of Richard Bach are the best representation of the literary process of American literature of 1960-1970.
  Richard Bach is the author of twelve novels and novellas and plenty of articles published in different magazines. But he is best known for his novellas “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” (1970) and “Illusions” (1977). Nevertheless, his life and literary career is little researched in literary criticism and especially in the modern linguistics. Most of the researches are devoted to the compositional and linguistic peculiarities of his novella “Seagull”. But his later works are almost uninvestigated, even his fundamental writing “Illusions” which is considered to be one of his best writings full of different stylistic devices...
  Stylistic devices help to create figurative language in fiction and other types of discourses in the modern times. But their appearance can be traced back even to the ancient times. The first words of all languages were definitely connected with sensible and material objects such as earth, trees, beasts, men, song, rain and the like. A little later words appeared to be needed to reflect some abstract ideas and spiritual emotions. Perhaps the only way to express such notions for ancient people was to adapt material terms to spiritual sphere [22, p. 365]. As a result “ordinary” and neutral words got expressive meaning. For example:
  A cold, dark and dreary day – adjectives are used in their first nominal meaning.
  Cold, dark and dreary life – adjectives are used in stylistic function in the form of epithets. They show not their direct meaning but figurative sense, expressing grief, sorrow or melancholy of the speaker.
  When speaking about stylistic devices, we should first say about the distinction of literal and figurative meaning of a word...
  In the course of this study we have made the followings conclusions:
  Stylistic device is a conscious and intentional intensification of a typical structure or semantic property of a language unit with the aim to create a vivid image and make the text more expressive. Stylistic devices are divided into stylistic tropes (lexica level of the language) and stylistic figures (syntactical level of the language). The more detailed classification of stylistic devices includes also phonological, graphological, morphological lexicological, semantic and pragmatic language levels. The complexity of identifying stylistic devices in fiction is in the fact that sometimes they can be mixed up and resemble each other.
  Stylistic devices when using in fiction fulfill a lot of different functions in accordance to the theme of writing and its author. The most transparent functions of stylistic devices in fiction are decoration, directing the reader"s attention, conceptualizing the world, thematic understanding of a text, picturesqueness, emotional representation...
