  Introduction
  The most important reason for the success of English is naturally the historical role of England as a colonial power. The first sustained contact between Europe and America opens the door to new world-wide civilizations, including India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and eventually many parts of Africa. So it was this imperial impulse which carried the English language round the world.
  Later the ideology of American capitalism has been the driving force in the spread of English.

  1. English as the Language of International Communication
  The biblical story of the Tower of Babel demonstrates the adverse effects on communication and cooperation when individuals speak different languages. The same message emanates from numerous studies that examine the effect of the language barrier on international communication and trade. So, no wonder people need a language “common” for different language speakers. In today’s world English plays the functions of lingua franca and international language. In fact, many scholars nowadays underline the emergence of English as a genuine global language, “genuine” used to reflect the reality that English is recognized by more countries as a lingua franca than any other language (Li, 2003).
