  INTRODUCTION
  
  The present study is devoted to the investigation of the types and functions of borrowings from Russian in the modern English media texts. The topicality of the present research can be explained, first of all, by the meaningful and, consequently, widely studied notion of borrowings. In the modern world borrowings from different languages are considered to be a regular and ordinary process. That is why borrowings, including Russian borrowings, are often seen in the English media texts. Media materials and publications reflect all the changes taken place in the language. The great amount of borrowings from Russian in the modern English media texts confirms wide bilateral contacts between Russia and English-speaking countries.
  In spite of active study of borrowings from Russian in the English language, some questions are still under question. There is not any strict classification of borrowings. Their level of assimilation is also investigated in modern Linguistics not enough.
  The aim of the present study is to hold an analysis of types and functions of borrowings from Russian in the modern English media texts.
  The tasks of the present research are defined by its aim and represented by the following:

  CHAPTER 1. SPECIFICS OF BORROWINGS IN MODERN LINGUISTICS
  1.1 Definition of the Notion “Borrowing”
  
  English language like any other languages of the world was developing not separately, but due to the contacts with other languages during the history of its evolution. Consequently, borrowing is one of the most wide-spread sources of language changes in its history and of replenishing of English vocabulary. The dominant position of borrowing in the vocabulary of the English language is the main reason of the increased interest of scientists towards the problem of borrowings and their peculiarities such as Russian scientists V.P. Sekerin [24], O.E. Bondarets [5], N.N. Amosova [1], A.V. Terenin [25] and foreign scientists J. Schultz [60], R. Stockwell [62], G.M. Anderman [29], D. Kuthe [48] and others.
  Borrowings as the means of replenishing of the language vocabulary occur during the immediate contact between different nations and countries. In the process of borrowing of lexical units there is also the borrowing of cultural values of people of different nations. Constant language contacts lead to the need of expression of new notions, objects and phenomena which are strange for native culture. This need is solved with the help of appearance of new lexical units by means of word-formational models of the language, semantic change of meanings of existing lexical units of the language and direct and indirect borrowings from other languages [3].
