  Morphology is the branch of linguistics that studies words; it is concerned with the internal structure of words as well as the formal relationships that exist among the words of a language. The words known to a speaker are recorded as lexical entries in his mental lexicon. When a word is acquired, it is stored in the lexicon together with its structural properties including its lexical or functional category (noun, verb, adjective, determiner, auxiliary, etc.), its phonological form and its meaning. Simple words are arbitrary pairings of sound and meaning, cf. car, look, sweet, the, must. Complex words contain two or more lexical units and, as a consequence, are no longer completely arbitrary; they can carry different degrees of motivation. All regular complex words in English have their head (the constituent determining the category as well as the other morpho-syntactic features of the combination) on the right. Thus, complex words follow general structural patterns that are characteristic for the inventory of the words in the lexicon. These patterns constitute tacit knowledge of the speaker and thus make up part of his linguistic competence.
  Morphology is customarily divided into inflection and word formation, and word formation in turn into derivation and compounding. Both inflection and derivation deal with complex non-compound words, which means they consist of a base (which can be a root or stem) and either an affix, a whole or partial reduplication of the base (not very relevant for English), a modification of the base, a deletion of part of the base, or zero.
