  Introduction
  
  It is well known that belles-letters reflects culture and national values of communities. Texts of belles-letters are considered to be the means of cross-cultural communication. That is why they draw attention of different scientists. Nowadays we can feel a great need for communication. In the process of intercultural communication the need for reading books of foreign writers is more topical. Moreover, practicability of belles-lettres usage as teaching material is also practically assured. In accordance with the said above there is a requirement for belles-lettres adaptation, subject to the main motives of reading books in a foreign language.
  Adaptation of belles-lettres is considered to be a very complicated task. By adaptation not only readers’ level of English (or other foreign language) proficiency, but also their age, national and social characteristics are very important. In modern Russia and other countries there is a wide range of adapted belles-lettres. But very often the process of adaptation is not supported by scientific theoretical foundation. This fact explains the topicality of the problem of linguistic adaptation of belles-lettres. The topicality of the present research consists in the inadequate investigation of the process of belles-lettres adaptation and in the absence of strict distinction between devices and transformations during adaptation of belles-lettres.
  According to the topicality of the theme, we can define the aim of the research which consists in the linguistic analysis of English adapted belles-lettres.
  In order to achieve this aim, the following tasks must be solved:

  1.1 The Essence of Adapted Text
  
  The notion “adaptation” is a very broad term. It is a unique phenomenon which is used in a wide range of different sciences, for example, biology, psychology, physiology, technical sphere, sociology, etc. In every sphere of human activities, including linguistic science, the term “adaptation” is used in order to show the process of humans’ accommodation to the definite conditions of living. Thus, in linguistics this term is relevant to the notion of linguistic coordination of humans’ actions [8, 22: 7].
  In order to define the notion “adaptation” concerning linguistic science, we should first of all examine different meanings of this term which are given in English and Russian dictionaries.
  According to Cambridge dictionary, there are two meanings of the word “adaptation”:
  • the process of changing to suit different conditions;
  • a film, book, play, etc. [60].
  In the Oxford dictionary we can find just the same meanings of the word “adaptation”:
  • a film/movie, book or play that is based on a particular piece of work but that has been changed for a new situation;
  • the process of changing something, for example, your behaviour, to suit a new situation [62].
  But in the definition dictionary of the Russian researcher T.F. Efremova we can observe both biological and linguistic notion of adaptation:
  • accommodation of body or its parts to the conditions of living (biology);
