  The category of modality and means of its indicating in speech is one of the most topical questions in the modern linguistics. The topicality of the theme of the present research can be explained, first of all, by the fact that the problem of definition of the notion “modality” and its classification is today investigated very little. In spite of the fact that the investigation of the category of modality began long ago, nowadays there is not any strict classification of modality or the scheme of its indicating in the Russian and English languages.
  The object of the research is the category of modality in the modern linguistics.
  The subject of the present paper is means of indicating of modality in political discourse.
  The aim of the work is to analyze the means of indicating the category of modality in English-speaking and Russian-speaking political discourse materials in comparative aspect.

  Modality is a fundamental topic in the modern linguistics. The crucial importance of modality research is stipulated by the fact that modality underlies one of the most significant features of the language, in particularly the capacity to convey information about events and objects not only in time and space but also in actuality or potentiality.
  The category of modality is considered to be one of the most complicated and disputable linguistic problems. First of all, it is linked with the fact that the notion of modality is defined differently in various researches. More over, sometimes the aspects of modality are not just different but contrasting. Consequently, there are dispersed opinions concerning modality and means of its indicating in a language...
  The research was devoted to the comparative analysis of means of indicating the category of modality in English-speaking and Russian-speaking political discourse materials. In the course of the research we have revealed that modality is a linguistic category that refers to the factual status of a proposition based on the concept of possibility and necessity. The difference of this category in the English and Russian languages consists in the fact that in the English language modality is considered to be a grammatical category and in the Russian language it is a semantic category. But the types of modality such as epistemic, deontic, alethic, teleological and others exist in the both languages.
  Modality is one of the categories best expressed in the political discourse. Political discourse is defined in the present research as a number of texts and speeches using political vocabulary in order to employ political actions. Political discourse of the English and Russian languages is characterized by conventionality, intertextuality, persuasiveness, political vocabulary, complexity of syntactical structures and presence of stylistic expressiveness, as well as different indicators of modality. The most used means of indicating modality in political discourse of the English and Russian languages are the category of grammatical mood (subjunctive and imperative mood) and modal verbs.
