  Introduction
  
  It is known that every culture in the definite period of its evolution creates proper names with some national, cultural and historical semantics. With the course of time these proper names which have the definite character and national peculiarities become stable and socially necessary because they reflect character, physical appearance or nationality of people and places. More over, these names can often become the symbols of different features and characteristics. Thus, they have a form of proper names, but omit some features of their grammatical and lexical categories.
  Active development of linguocultural methods in the study of proper names and the great interest of scientists towards the connotative meaning and cultural colouring of a word lead to the linguistic focus towards the problems of onomatology. One more reason of such great interest towards the study of proper names, especially in the aspect of translation, is the fact that proper names reflect both linguistic and extralinguistic factors of a language development.
  The study of peculiarities of proper names translation from English into Russian and from Russian into English is one of the urgent themes of investigation at present. The topicality of the present research consists in the fact that proper names are language units with cultural identification. Consequently, their cultural component must be taken into account during their translation to the other language. More over, with the spreading contacts between different countries some strategies of translation of proper names are becoming less productive and giving place to the new translation techniques which are not studied in linguistics as yet.
  The aim of the present research is to analyze the peculiarities of the translation of proper names (anthroponyms) from English into Russian and from Russian into English.

  Chapter I Problem of Translation of Proper Names
  1.1 Definition and Classification of Proper Names
  
  The study of proper names is a prerogative of the branch of linguistics called onomastics. By this term the following meanings can be understood:
  1) a branch of linguistics which studies proper names (first and second names, cognomen, names of animals, etc;
  2) a system of proper names as a special subject of linguistics studies.
  According to the units under study, onomastics can be divided into several types, such as antroponymics (the study of personal names), toponymics (the study of geographical names), zoonymics (the study of animals’ names), astronymics (the study of the names of celestial objects).
  It must be noted that in the earlier periods of linguistics development this branch was called “onomatology”. This term is used today in order to draw a line between a branch of linguistics and a system of proper names in general [15, 7].
  The main objects of onomatology as an independent science are proper names and motivation of their appearance in the languages. The main methods of onomatology are the following:
  1) comparative historical method;
  2) structural method;
  3) genetic method;
  4) method of onomastic cartography;
  5) typological method;
  6) etymological method;
